Culture and Language
Paisas, the residents of Medellin, are very friendly people and welcoming to tourists. They are proud of their city’s progress from troubled Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel times of the past. Many parts of the city are very safe, especially El Poblado. Many PokerNomads live in this area and report that you can walk safely day or night, including Calle 10. The official language of Medellin is Spanish and learning it will be helpful as many of the local Paisas do not speak English.
There are a lot of really cool clubs, bars and discos in Medellin. The majority of the discotecas play crossover music, which means you’ll hear a mix of different genres throughout the night, including electronic, popular rock, salsa, reggaeton, vallenato, cumbia, merengue, and bachata. The club Sixttina is a great place to hang out that features great International DJs, big parties and beautiful people. Also, make sure to check out Parque Poblado and Parque Lleras as these are very popular hangout spots on the weekends.
Cost of Living
Medellin has a variety of housing options from cheap apartments to huge grindhouse mansions.Medellin has beautiful 3-5 bedroom penthouses and mansions for $1,500 to 4k USD/ month. If you are on a budget, you can find a reasonable apartment for $400-500/month with a decent 2 bedroom being around $1,000. The further you go from the area El Poblado, the cheaper rent will be. Prices for a night out in town is 2$ for a beer or $30-50 for a bottle in a club. The cost of living is pretty low in Medellin and is one of the reasons PokerNomads find it hard leaving this amazing destination.
The city’s public transportation included taxis, buses and an urban train called Medellin Metro. The Taxi Service in Medellin is amazing. You can request a taxi 24/7 using your smartphone and they show up promptly. The cost is $2-5 to get you anywhere you need to go within the city and the fare is metered.
The weather in Medellin is perfect year round due to the proximity to the equator. It is a pleasant spring like climate that many PokerNomads have a hard time leaving. Medellín is known as “La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera” or “City of the Eternal Spring”. However, as the city is located in a valley and many of its districts are on slopes, temperatures can be slightly cooler on the surrounding mountains. The city’s temperatures range from 15 to 30 °C (59 to 86 °F) and the average annual temperature is 22 °C (72 °F).
Poker Grinding Facts
There is a fairly large community of PokerNomads living in Medellin year round. During the winter months there are 30-40 poker players living in different apartments and poker house mansions. The internet connection is generally pretty good but having backup is always recommended. You can get backup internet connected through your smartphone 3g speed for $20/month.
